One of the most important and expensive decisions you’ll have to make (or have already made) for using the Gear VR is how much storage to get with your phone. I purchased a used Samsung S6 off of Craigslist that only had 32GB and quickly found myself running out of space. Even if I had been given a choice to pay more, an extra 32GB device storage would have cost upwards of $100 which is frustrating when you can get external storage for just $12 for 32GB.
My goal was to connect external storage directly to the Gear VR headset using the Micro USB port at the base and pull media directly from it realtime. There were two questions here 1.) can data be sent through this Gear VR Micro USB port? And 2.) will the Oculus apps like Oculus Video and MilkVR recognize this external device and play media contained there. Unfortunately, the answer to both questions here seems to be no, the experiment failed.
While it’s less convenient, you can still use a Micro USB drive directly with your phone and move files back and forth using the My Files app. The steps are: launch My Files, select a Local storage option (including Device storage) then select “More” at the top right. Now you can select multiple folders or files to then move back and forth between your external device and local storage. In this video I also discuss the size of the required software to run Oculus on the Gear VR along with the size of recommended apps from Oculus.
