Since seeing a BLJ as a kid in the 70’s, I was always curious about them and this is my first. Back in the early and mid 70’s except for Superbowl 6, there weren’t too many people with power. There was a guy named Rabbi on my old standby back then, channel 22 the Sugarbowl as that’s where all the Sweet Thangs were, that had a BLJ-600 and he was pretty much the king of the channel or Channel Control as we called it back then. You act out of line, you were put on ‘Papers’ and I guess it would be like being ‘excommunicado’ in todays terms.
Anyway, I don’t know what he had before getting a BLJ, but he got a BLJ-600 and was even stronger. I was coming around to being a CB expert back then so I was invited over to help him tune it up. If we tuned it for peak watts, we could get it to pin the peak reading 2000 watt wattmeter he had. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t really doing 2k, maybe a harmonic or spur or something, but I seen it (or actually tuned that) with my own hands and eyes. He had a catalog of those amps and I remember seeing the biggest was a BLJ-2000 and it ran on 220v only. Over the upcoming years, I knew a couple more people with BLJ’s the 1000 or less, but have never knew anyone or seen an actual BLJ-2000. I would be interested in seeing or even having one of those for curiosity and nostalgia reasons.
Anyway, the BLJ-500 I have here after going thru it and reverse engineering it is not much of a mystery at all. Basically a zero bias grounded grid amplifier similar to a D+A or Palomar. This 500 has 5 20Lf6 tubes, 1 driving 4. The main thing I found that is different and I don’t like is that it does not have a filament transformer. It gets the filaments off the mains (110ac) and runs the 5 20v tubes in series. That’s not as bad as running the HV right off the mains, but still no isolation, I don’t like it. Since the seller wanted a fortune for the tubes, so I got the amp without them, I am going to add a 6v filament transformer and convert this to 6v tubes coming off an additional transformer instead of the mains. Also what’s a little different is the 2 big transformers have a single HV out winding only and are hooked in series. I don’t see a problem with that, but its just different. It uses a full wave bridge which I like. Since it doesn’t have any Bias or anyway to cutoff the tubes when not operating, it runs both the HV windings thru a relay to cut off the HV when not operating. I don’t see a need to switch both windings, Palomar switches only a leg, and also this amp uses the same relay with the antenna switching to switch the HV as well. An arc on that relay will take out your radio, and one of the reasons I got this for cheap is that it did just that. The seller had a great D201A that this amp took out the receive, but he thought it might have been just the radio giving up the ghost so he hooked up a 2990 to it. Yep took that out and killed it, took out all the digital PCB’s! I think I will mod it to switch only 1 HV ac leg, and also use a separate relay for it (like Palomar) instead of using the antenna relay. That along with using a transformer for the filaments should take care of this amp taking out radios.
I did have a question that does anyone know about or have info on the ‘On/Off’ switch mounted to the main board? Yes, I do know what it does. It cuts down the drive going into the driver tube, like a high or low drive. I just wonder what drive levels was that made for. I’m sure with the switch on, it is made for 4 watt drive. With the switch off, and the cathode ground going thru a 500 ohm resistor, I wonder what drive level that would be? Anyone have a manual or info on that? Just curious. OK, back to the bench on this one, wish me luck!
