Wenner Soil Resistivity Testing with the AEMC Model 6472
In an electrical system, effective grounding ensures a safe working environment as well as proper equipment performance. A key factor for grounding system design is soil resistivity. Soil resistivity determines what the resistance of a grounding electrode will be, to what depth it must be driven in order to obtain low earth resistance, and even the type of grounding system that should be designed for this location and facility. Therefore it is critical to know the local soil resistivity before designing and implementing a grounding system at your site.
In this video, we demonstrate a simple way to measure soil resistivity known as the Wenner method. This test involves placing four equally spaced and in-line electrodes into the ground. The two outer electrodes inject current into the soil, and the two inner electrodes measure voltage, which is then used to calculate soil resistance. Our test instrument is the AEMC Ground Tester Model 6472, an instrument that automatically calculates and displays soil resistivity, with no manual calculations necessary.
